-isms

One big -ism that sticks out to me is racism. The race card is frequently used today. Partly because it does exist. I think that this is one thing that may come when working with families of different backgrounds. It may not be the case. Some people just may clash because of those difference and are not equipped with the tools to address those concerns. Then it will blow up into more than it really is.

There may be -isms based off of sexual orientation and also religion. These are two more subjects that are relevant today. It is important to gain all of the information you can on how to handle these things as they come up. It can help create harmony in the classroom.

Thanks for sharing Dorothy. I find myself getting annoyed when someone says "Oh, you're pulling the race card." As you said, it exists. And just because someone doesn't directly feel its effects, or recognizes its effects in their own life, they can't tell someone who is experiencing it that their experience and feelings around it are not valid. And that applies to all isms. Discrimination affects all of humanity whether it is directly, or indirectly.

Dorothy,

Racism is probably one of the biggest issues that we face today. In the U.S., I see various issues regarding race. In the past few years, it was dealing with African American people. Today, the biggest issue is with racism against Asians. Being an Asian, I see that it is extremely scary to see the differences coming to violence. With the ongoing pandemic, the constant violence against Asians, just creates a divide in our communities. Like you said, "It really exists!" We need to find ways to deal with this issue! Thank you for sharing.
