Attracting Quality

In reading the article about the shortage of good teachers and also the required reading assignments, you can clearly see that there is a problem with finding quality educators. Garcia (2019), "A shortage of teachers harms students, teachers, and the public education system as a whole. Lack of sufficient, qualified teachers and staff instability threaten students’ ability to learn and reduce teachers’ effectiveness, and high teacher turnover consumes economic resources that could be better deployed elsewhere. The teacher shortage makes it more difficult to build a solid reputation for teaching and to professionalize it, which further contributes to perpetuating the shortage."

In order to tackle the issue of teacher shortage and quality, there needs to be more support established for the teachers. There also needs to be better compensation. There need to be things that attract educators of quality and makes them want to stay.

Garcia, E. (2019). The teacher shortage is real, large and growing, and worse than we thought. Retrieved from https://www.epi.org/publication/the-teacher-shortage-is-real-large-and-growing-and-worse-than-we-thought-the-first-report-in-the-perfect-storm-in-the-teacher-labor-market-series/

Hello Dorothy,

I really enjoyed reading your blog. You are so right about the shortage of teachers. If they pay was the right pay then we would have enough teachers. I know also how teachers will leave one place to go to another one because they might pay more. It's also hard to find good teachers that are willing to do the work. Also with the shortage, it doesn't make the parents feel comfortable because they might see a lot of teacher turnovers that shouldn't happen. The director and the system needs to up the pay for the teachers.

Hello Dorothy,

Thank you for sharing! The issue of shortage of teachers is a constant reminder of the need for an update in the educational system. I believe that the reason why the shortage is an issue is because no one wants to be an educator. The number continues to dwindle. What are ways you think the position of teacher can be as sought after as it was in the past?
