Diversity Perspectives

The country of origin I chose was India.

Ways to be culturally responsive:

  1. Study the culture.

  2. Speak to people of that same culture to understand what they believe in.

  3. Take some cultural sensitivity classes.

  4. Take some classes on the language.

  5. Speak with the parents when they come.

It is important to talk with those involved so that you can gain a deeper perspective on what they are looking for and how they operate as a family. I would hope that this helps the family understand that I respect their culture and I am interesting in their way of thinking. This should bring closeness and a sense of respect to all involved.

Hi Dorothy,

Being culturally responsive means making an effort to connect with children and families of different cultures than our own. Your list details key elements in ways that you will culturally respond to meeting diverse families' needs. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Dorothy,

Thanks for sharing, great post. As an educator I believe it is very important to reflect on any bias you may have so that you can grow as an educator and as a person. Sometimes when you work with people from a different culture it can be very overwhelming especially if there is a language barrier. One must properly prepare themselves to be open-minded to change and respectfully of differences of others. In the classroom the educator definitely should find ways to incorporate the culture of every family into the environment where children want to feel comfortable and secure. Every child should feel like they belong.

Dorothy, I think your point of showing respect and finding out about the family through respectful means is the key to being responsive
