Impacts on Early Emotional Development

The region I chose to research is Eastern and Southern Africa. Children in this region are stricken with poverty and disease. They are having to forget their education so that they can work to help provide for their families. Countries such as Ethiopia and Sub-Saharan Africa have war stricken countries, and unfortunately some of the children and families are murdered.

These things along can effect the development of a child. If they are not properly nourished, they cannot develop properly. They die of hunger. These issues can create great stress on a child. I remember seeing these commercials about sending .05 cents can save a child. They looked sad and their stomachs were swollen. This is a prime example of ways that poverty effects children. They were surrounded by flies and diseases.

Hello Dorothy,

Learning what others may be facing helps us understand why having a trauma-informed care approach with families who may have immigrated from war-torn countries can be beneficial.

Thanks for sharing.

Hi Dorothy,

Yes, many third world countries face this challenge. When my father was a child, in the Philippines, he had to stop going to school at the age of five to help my grandfather in the farm to provide for his younger siblings. I was distraught to learn that he was tending crops and cattle, and he was also using a machete at the age of five. This goes to show the many hardships that we are lucky to not have our children experience in their lifetimes. Thank you for sharing!
