NAEYC and DEC codes of ethics

I-2.5—To respect the dignity and preferences of each family and to make an effort to learn about its structure, culture, language, customs, and beliefs.

Ø This one is significant to me because I know I will be working with several different backgrounds, and it is important to show them the same respect as anyone else. They are entitled to be included in their child’s education. I would not want to be ignored because of my race or religion.

P-2.1—We shall not deny family members access to their child’s classroom or program setting unless access is denied by court order or other legal restriction.

Ø I have kids and I would want the opportunity to go into their classroom to see what they are learning. This helps me connect with my kids and their teacher

I-3A.1—To establish and maintain relationships of respect, trust, confidentiality, collaboration, and cooperation with co-workers.

Ø I find great strength in working with my coworkers. We all are on the same path with the same destination. It is good to have a support system.

Hi Dorothy,

It is most important to have a solid support system. It has been personally experienced that one of the most effective ways to maintain such a vital tool, is consistently supporting others. Acting as a solid support to others will almost guarantee those who benefitted from your generosity will be available to assist in your time of need.

Dorothy, I feel the same as you. How can we effectively serve families if don't take the time to learn about them? A team that doesn't have respect for each other and willing to work together cause for a drama field environment where children don't receive the best of care. I have worked for a daycare that didn't allow parents to go to the back to drop off and pick up their child, I found that kind of odd and even stranger the parents would drop their child off at a place like that. I can't don't that, I would have to be able to access where my children will spend majority of there time.

Hi Dorothy, my values are aligned with yours. Respect is an essential value. children and families that are enrolled in our programs should be respected. we should learn about their values and beliefs, their culture, and become familiar with the ways they raises their children. Respect will assist us to collaborate with them, and have them as a vital resource in our learning environment.
