Perspectives on Diversity and Culture

When speaking to one of the people I interviewed, I asked them to define culture and diversity. She said, "Culture is the description an characteristics of a person's background. Diversity is two different cultural backgrounds interacting within society. " In this course and my understanding of culture, it is how society operates within a system of beliefs, cultures, habits, etc. An example of it would be my grandmother believes that we should pray before we eat and sleep. This is something that we have done for years. It is our home custom and belief system. I did not see any omission when conducting my interviews. In speaking to these people, it became very clear that we all think of culture and diversity the same way. We just say it differently.

Hi Dorothy,

After interviewing one of my colleagues, I find it interesting how people define diversity vs. culture. Its profoundly to believe that both are deep-rooted, and how one perceives their beliefs, race, color, traditions, and rituals as an individual. Thanks for sharing!

Counseling through play may have a developmental or preventive focus when normal children are helped to cope with stressful situations in their lives. Even relatively brief counseling with a school…

Dorothy, I appreciate you sharing this and comparing/contrasting the concept. I too had very similar responses. I think the take home for me with learning in this course is the enormity of culture that lies beyond these obvious categories of culture, the 'why's' behind what makes people do what they do. Thanks for sharing! Rose
