We are currently living in a highly sexualized world and it plays a huge impact on the children of today. Sexualization in childhood is kind of unavoidable. We see it on the television, hear it in the music and everything around us. This does play a part in the inquisitive mind of children and it provokes conversations that parents are not ready to have, but they should.
As stated above things that introduce children to a highly sexualized environment are movies, songs and even art that they may see (drawings, graphics, etc.) For example, the kids are loving Cardi B. Her song W.A.P. was very popular. The artist was not concern who hears the song, so children of all ages were singing it. The lyrics are explicit.
The impact it plays is that some children may not know their boundaries. They may think that what they hear is find to imitate. This can cause aggressive sexual expressions and even mental issues from questioning their own sexuality at such a young age. This topic is something that has plagued many people. The resources and research has helped me gain a better understanding of the effects sexualizing in child development and what role it plays in a child's development.
Dorothy,
Something I have noticed is the influence that TikTok has been having on the younger generations. There are women parading around with lingerie on dancing to this WAP song. I totally agree with you stating that children want to imitate this type of behavior, and I believe that we should stop it before it gets out of hand. Children are able to access these things, and it can lead to a whole lot of trouble down the road. Thank you for sharing!
