A show I would not normally watch is Friends. The communication seemed to be a bit all over the place. They had positive body language, so you could tell that they all were acquainted with one another. There was a lot of laughing and smirks. There was a lot of hand gestures. You can tell when they were upset at one another or excited just by looking at their faces and body language. When I turned the sound back on, my assumptions were correct. The body language I studied was dead on for the most part. There were some parts where I thought they were upset, but they were not. The facial expression was not what I was reading. If I had been watching with the volume on, my assumptions would have been correct. Nonverbal communication can be deceiving because a person may look one way, but they are not. This is why it is important to monitor your nonverbal cues in education.
Hello,
Friends is one of my favorite tv shows, you’re right that there is a lot of laughing in it. The fact that you could tell what was going on tells me that you pay close attention to nonverbal communication which is a great skill to have!

When I read your post I fully understood why you nailed their communications with each other. The characters in Friends have huge nonverbal cues. Their facial expressions, the use of their hands to intensify makes it easier to understand what they are expressing. This makes me think of my nonverbal communication in my classroom!
Dorothy,
I found similar results with my assumptions of the nonverbal behavior. I wonder in our ECE work, how often do others misinterpret what we communicate without even realizing that our nonverbal actions have meaning?
Communication, whether it is verbal or nonverbal, is extremely important. I have not seen Friends, but I have heard that it is definitely one of the greats. In my culture, we can express an entire story with just a hand gesture or facial expression. Being able to connect with someone to the point where we can already realize the message without having words is very interesting. Thank you for sharing!
